Chief of Police Will Hannah, a white male, was tragically killed on September 21, 1899, in Dalton, Georgia. He was 40 years old at the time of his death. Chief Hannah was attempting to arrest a man for selling illegal liquor when the incident occurred. He rode to the suspect's house on horseback and found the man in a ravine at the foot of Mount Rachel. During the pursuit, the suspect shot Chief Hannah in the chest with a shotgun loaded with squirrel shot, leading to his immediate death.
