In the early hours of a Sunday morning, a dispute that began inside a Dalton, Georgia pub tragically escalated, culminating in the death of 28-year-old Rashad Nathaniel Goldston on April 25, 2021. Goldston, an African American man from Cleveland, Tennessee, was fatally shot in the parking lot of The Oyster Pub & Grill at approximately 2:30 a.m. The initial altercation, which reportedly involved the girlfriend of the suspect, spilled out from the bar and into the parking area, setting the stage for a violent confrontation.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to 26-year-old Devon R. Wheeler of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Wheeler was arrested and subsequently charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Eyewitness accounts and the ensuing investigation painted a picture of a chaotic scene where Goldston was attempting to intervene and protect his cousin who had been knocked to the ground. In an effort to disperse the crowd and come to his cousin's aid, Goldston reportedly drove his vehicle toward the group and may have brandished a firearm. In response, Wheeler fired multiple shots at Goldston's vehicle.
While attempting to flee the scene after being shot in the back, Goldston crashed his car a short distance away. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The legal proceedings that followed saw a significant development in September 2021 when Devon Wheeler pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. In addition to this, he also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The court accepted the plea, acknowledging that Wheeler's actions were the result of a sudden and violent passion provoked by the unfolding events, which legally justified the reduction from a murder charge.
