Constable William Melton Mears, a 34-year-old white male from Sylvania, Georgia, was tragically killed on August 9, 1900. Constable Mears was serving with the Screven County Constable's Office at the time of his death. He was ambushed and shot while attempting to serve a warrant on a teenager accused of communicating threats.
