On a Wednesday in March of 1901, Columbus Police Officer William S. Elliott responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on 5th Avenue. It was a call that would tragically be his last. Upon his arrival and subsequent entry into a room within the house, Officer Elliott was immediately shot and killed by the suspect involved in the domestic dispute.
In the harrowing moments that followed, Officer Elliott's partner, who had accompanied him to the scene, was able to react swiftly.
The partner returned fire, and in the exchange, the suspect who had just taken Officer Elliott's life was also shot and killed. The swift and decisive action of his partner prevented any further loss of life at the scene. Due to the death of the suspect at the hands of the responding officer, there was no subsequent arrest or trial. The case was resolved at the scene with the death of the perpetrator.
