Gideon Littleton Mathis, a 57-year-old white male, served as a Special Officer for the Sandersville Police Department in Georgia. On December 23, 1904, Mathis was fatally shot on Jernigan Street while attempting to arrest a man who refused to comply with compulsory vaccination.
