James W. "Jim" Hammond, a 37-year-old white male, served as the Town Marshal for Statham, Georgia. On February 1, 1907, he encountered a tragic end while performing his duties. Marshal Hammond was patrolling the area when he discovered a man sleeping on the railroad tracks. Upon waking the individual, the man produced a handgun and shot Marshal Hammond in the chest, resulting in his immediate death.
