William Henry Newberry, a 31-year-old white male, served as the Town Marshal in Jakin, Georgia. On August 15, 1911, he tragically lost his life in the line of duty. Marshal Newberry was responding to the distress calls of a woman screaming for help inside her home. Upon entering the residence, he was fatally shot by the woman's husband, who was later identified as a preacher. The suspect managed to escape and fled to Florida.
