In the summer of 1947, a dedicated lawman's life was tragically cut short in the woods of Banks County, Georgia. Investigator Melvin John Clark, a 41-year-old male, was part of a team of federal and state agents conducting a raid on an illegal still near Homer on June 1, 1947. As the agents moved into position to surround the operation, a series of gunshots echoed through the trees.
When the other agents converged on Investigator Clark's location, they found him fatally wounded.
A state agent had witnessed three men fleeing the scene and gave chase, but they managed to escape into the dense woods. The news of the investigator's death sent shockwaves through the local community, and a posse was quickly formed to hunt for the perpetrators.
The ensuing investigation identified the owners of the still, who, upon being questioned, named the three men seen running from the scene as brothers: Charlie, Demrist, and Eurice Gather. Fearing potential mob violence, law enforcement worked with the brothers' father to arrange for their peaceful surrender. The three were then swiftly transported to a jail in Atlanta for their safety.
During the subsequent legal proceedings, Eurice Gather, a 28-year-old former serviceman, confessed to firing the shots that killed Investigator Clark. On December 5, 1947, he was sentenced to life in federal prison. His two brothers, Charlie and Demrist, each received four-year sentences for their involvement. Two other men who were also present at the still were later identified and sentenced to two years each.
