Mark Allen MacPhail Sr., a 27-year-old white male, was tragically killed on August 19, 1989, in Savannah, Georgia. Officer MacPhail was working an off-duty security job at a bus station and fast food restaurant when he responded to the cries of a homeless man who was being robbed and pistol-whipped. In his attempt to intervene, MacPhail was shot underneath his vest and then again in the head as he fell, leading to his immediate death.
