On a June day in 1991, the community of Tifton, Georgia, was shaken by the loss of one of its own. Captain Raymond Bussell Merritt, a 46-year-old male veteran of the Tift County Sheriff's Office, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. A seasoned law enforcement officer with 19 years at the sheriff's office and previous service with the Tifton Police Department, Merritt was also a United States Army veteran.
The fatal incident unfolded when Captain Merritt responded to a domestic
disturbance call on Bill Bowen Road. A man had assaulted his wife and daughter and subsequently barricaded himself inside a separate building on the property. As Merritt and other officers arrived and attempted to establish communication, they cautiously approached the porch of the building. Without warning, the man inside fired a. 38 caliber handgun, the bullet striking Captain Merritt.
In the immediate aftermath, fellow officers returned fire, wounding the suspect. Despite their efforts, Captain Merritt succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was survived by his wife and two children, leaving behind a family and a community to mourn his sudden and violent death. The man responsible for the shooting survived his injuries.
The suspect was taken into custody and faced the legal consequences of his actions. He ultimately pleaded guilty to the murder of Captain Raymond Bussell Merritt, with the addition of being mentally ill. The court sentenced him to life in prison for the crime. The perpetrator of this senseless act of violence remained incarcerated until his own death in 2013.
