In the summer of 1992, a tragic event unfolded in the small town of Hazelhurst, Georgia, leading to the death of Sheriff Marcus Lee Hall, Sr., a 61-year-old white male. The incident, which took place on June 21, began as a response to a domestic violence call. A man had reportedly shot his wife at a local restaurant, and Sheriff Hall was one of the officers dispatched to the scene.
Upon learning that the suspect had fled the restaurant and returned to his residence, Sheriff Hall
proceeded to the location. He was known for not typically carrying a firearm, keeping it in his vehicle unless he anticipated a clear and present danger. In this instance, he retrieved his service weapon before approaching the suspect's home. As he arrived, the suspect emerged from the house, armed with a handgun, and immediately opened fire on the sheriff.
Sheriff Hall returned fire, and in the ensuing exchange of gunfire, both he and the suspect were fatally wounded. The investigation that followed confirmed that the suspect was responsible for the initial shooting of his wife and for the death of Sheriff Hall. As the perpetrator was killed at the scene, there were no further arrests or legal proceedings in connection with the sheriff's death. The community mourned the loss of Sheriff Hall, who was survived by his son and daughter and remembered for his dedicated service to Jeff Davis County.
