In the early morning hours of December 18, 2025, the life of 26-year-old Cole Anargyros Mantas was tragically cut short in downtown Athens, Georgia. Police responded to a "person down" call near the intersection of West Broad Street and Pulaski Street at approximately 2:23 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Mantas in the roadway with critical gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led authorities to identify a suspect. Jamarioun Clark, a 22-year-old from Madison, Georgia, was named as the primary individual of interest in the case. Law enforcement officials from multiple agencies, including the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, the Morgan County Sheriff's Office, the Madison Police Department, the Covington Police Department, the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, collaborated on the investigation.
On December 19, 2025, the day after the fatal shooting, Jamarioun Clark was arrested in Newton County. He faces a series of serious charges, including felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. While an arrest has been made, authorities have not yet released a potential motive for the shooting or disclosed whether Mantas and Clark knew each other. The investigation is ongoing.
