In the early morning hours of August 28, 2000, a routine traffic stop on northbound I-95 in Camden County, Georgia, turned into a fatal encounter for a dedicated officer. Sergeant Carlton Daniel Jenkins, a 36-year-old male with the Camden County Sheriff's Office, was tragically shot and killed at approximately 12:39 a.m. near mile marker 19. A seven-year veteran of the department, he had been recognized as Officer of the Year in 1999 and was survived by his wife and five children.
Sergeant Jenkins had pulled over a vehicle linked to several armed robberies that had occurred earlier that evening in a neighboring Florida jurisdiction. He instructed the driver to get out of the car and move to the rear. The suspect initially stood in the vehicle's doorway before reaching back inside, ostensibly for his license. Instead, he produced a weapon and fired four shots at Sergeant Jenkins. After the officer fell to the ground, the assailant used Jenkins' own service weapon to deliver a final, fatal shot to the head. The entire brutal exchange lasted less than twenty seconds.
A passing truck driver witnessed a portion of the tragic event and was able to use Sergeant Jenkins' radio to call for help, providing a description of the suspect's vehicle. This crucial information led to the apprehension of the suspect roughly four hours later. The individual arrested was identified as Jason Bryant.
Bryant faced charges of murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. During his trial, prosecutors presented evidence that included video footage from the traffic stop and DNA evidence showing Sergeant Jenkins' blood was on the car Bryant was driving when he was arrested. Bryant was subsequently convicted and sentenced to two life sentences plus 35 years, without the possibility of parole. In August of 2010, to honor his memory and ultimate sacrifice, August 28th was officially declared Sergeant Carlton Daniel Jenkins Day in Camden County.
