In the summer of 2021, a fatal encounter in a Warner Robins, Georgia, Walmart parking lot cut short the life of 52-year-old Gregory Lee Arnett. On the evening of July 7th, Arnett was sitting in his parked vehicle at the Walmart on Booth Road when he was approached by two individuals with firearms. The assailants, later identified as Rickey Martin Jr., then 20, and a 15-year-old named Ayns Smith, demanded he surrender his vehicle.
A struggle ensued between Arnett and Martin over Martin's
weapon. During the confrontation, multiple shots were fired into Arnett's car, striking him twice. He was rushed to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. A witness at the scene reported hearing the gunshots and seeing two males fleeing. Investigators quickly determined the motive was likely an attempted carjacking.
Warner Robins police arrested Rickey Martin Jr. and the juvenile suspect, who was 13 at the time of his arrest, on July 15, 2021. Both were charged with murder and aggravated assault. Subsequent forensic examination of the evidence revealed that the fatal shot that killed Arnett was fired from the gun held by Ayns Smith.
In May of 2023, both individuals pleaded guilty to felony murder charges. Ayns Smith entered his guilty plea on May 15, followed by Rickey Martin Jr. on May 17, whose plea came during the deliberations of his two-day jury trial. Both were sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. According to the district attorney, they will have to serve a minimum of 30 years before becoming eligible for parole.
