In the quiet community of Pine Lake, Georgia, a routine traffic stop on a summer day escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of a dedicated police officer. Francis Manuel Ortega, a 25-year-old male, was shot and killed on August 11, 2005, during an altercation with the man he had pulled over. At the time of his death, he was a part-time officer with the Pine Lake Police Department and also served as a full-time officer with the Georgia Department of Human Resources Police.
The
incident unfolded in front of the Pine Lake Post Office on Rockbridge Road SW. Officer Ortega and his partner had initiated a traffic stop and, after obtaining paperwork from the driver, returned to their patrol car. The driver of the stopped vehicle, later identified as Cedric O'Neal Gordon, then approached the officers' vehicle. As the officers exited their car, a struggle broke out. Gordon managed to get Officer Ortega into a headlock and fatally shot him.
Following the shooting, Gordon and Officer Ortega's partner exchanged gunfire as Gordon fled into the nearby post office. The DeKalb County SWAT team was called to the scene and attempted to enter the building. As they made their entry, Gordon took his own life. It was later discovered that Gordon was wanted for violating his supervised release from prison.
In the wake of the tragic event, Officer Ortega was remembered as a friendly and professional officer who was a favorite among his colleagues. He was survived by his son, daughter, parents, and sister. To honor his memory and sacrifice, the Pine Lake Post Office, the site of his death, was officially dedicated as the 'Francis Manuel Ortega Post Office' in a ceremony on August 27, 2016. The dedication serves as a permanent reminder of the officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
