On a tragic Saturday afternoon in Rockdale County, Georgia, the day after his 28th birthday, Deputy Brian Lamar Mahaffey's life was cut short in the line of duty. It was May 8, 2010, when Mahaffey, a dedicated member of the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, was part of a team executing a warrant on Sand Hill Drive. The deputies were investigating a case involving rape and had entered a residence to gather more evidence.
The team methodically cleared the house, room by room.
As they moved through the master bedroom, the one place left to check was a closet. When Mahaffey opened the closet door, he was met with immediate gunfire. From within the confined space, Terry Lewis Brown, the 41-year-old homeowner and suspect in the rape investigation, began shooting. Mahaffey was struck in the abdomen and arm. Despite wearing a bulletproof vest, one of the rounds found a vulnerable spot, inflicting a fatal wound.
In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the other deputies returned fire, killing Brown at the scene. Emergency medical aid was rendered to Deputy Mahaffey, and he was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, he did not survive his injuries. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to handle the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
Brian Lamar Mahaffey, a graduate of Heritage High School where he was a standout on the football team, had been with the sheriff's office since 2005. He was remembered as a devoted husband and a loving father to his two young children, a son and a daughter. His death marked the first line-of-duty killing of a Rockdale County deputy in nearly a century, leaving a profound sense of loss within the community and his law enforcement family.
