On a summer night in 2014, a celebration among friends tragically ended in the death of Kevin Dushun Compton, a 27-year-old male from Powder Springs, Georgia. On July 12, Compton was out with two friends at Diamond Dave's nightclub on U.S. 41 in Kennesaw, celebrating one friend's new job. Inside the club, a fight broke out that was unrelated to Compton and his friends. Sensibly, they decided to leave the establishment to avoid the altercation.
As Compton and his friends were driving out of the nightclub's parking lot in a Nissan Versa, another man, Lewarner Jaron Scott, whose own friend had been injured in the fight, indiscriminately fired five shots at their departing vehicle. Compton, who was sitting in the backseat, was struck in the head by a. 9mm bullet. The driver of the car, initially unaware of the severity of the situation, drove north to Acworth before realizing Compton had been shot and called 911. Compton was rushed to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Following an investigation into the senseless act of violence, an arrest warrant was issued for Lewarner Jaron Scott. Scott, an Atlanta resident, later surrendered to the Kennesaw police. He was subsequently charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
In August 2015, a Cobb County jury found Lewarner Jaron Scott guilty on all counts. At the sentencing, family and friends remembered Kevin Compton as the rock of his family, a man who had bravely faced kidney disease and multiple heart surgeries throughout his life. His sister expressed that while she had prepared for the possibility of losing her brother to his health issues, she never imagined his life would be taken by an act of violence. The judge, before sentencing Scott to life in prison plus an additional 25 years, stated to him, 'You weren't with the wrong crowd that night. You were the wrong crowd.'
