In Kennesaw, Georgia, on the night of October 11, 2020, a young man's life was cut short in a burst of violence that stemmed from a dispute between two groups of teenagers and young adults. Devere Blake, a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot in the neck at an apartment complex near Kennesaw State University. The conflict that led to this tragic outcome had reportedly begun earlier at a nearby gas station, escalating from a physical altercation to a planned confrontation.
According to police reports, the two groups, armed with handguns and a shotgun, agreed to meet at the apartment complex to continue their fight. It was during this arranged meeting that the fatal shot was fired. While law enforcement has described the incident as gang-related, Devere Blake's family has disputed this, stating that he was present to act as a peacemaker and protect his younger relatives who were involved in the dispute, which they claim was over a teenage girl. They maintain that he was not a member of a gang. Blake himself was reportedly armed with a shotgun at the scene.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a swift and extensive investigation by the Cobb County Police Department led to the arrest of fourteen individuals, a mix of adults and teenagers, in connection with Devere Blake's death. The suspected shooter was identified as 16-year-old Kanye Leonard Sorrells. Another teenager, Jovan Sherden, also 16, was accused of handing the murder weapon to Sorrells. A 17-year-old, Treazure Lanae Walker, was charged with encouraging the shooting and attempting to hide the gun. The getaway driver was identified by investigators as 18-year-old Juquavious Antwan Ryan.
The numerous suspects faced a range of serious charges, including felony murder and aggravated assault. Under Georgia law, individuals who are party to a crime can also be charged with murder. Among those arrested were Devere Blake's own 17-year-old brother, Amere Blake, and 16-year-old cousin, Jonathan Bateman. The ages of the accused ranged from 16 to 21 years old. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of escalating youth violence, leaving a family to mourn the loss of a young father who, according to his mother, was a peaceful person who wanted to prevent the very violence that claimed his life.
