In the summer of 2021, a quiet golf course in Kennesaw, Georgia, became the scene of a shocking triple homicide. One of the victims was 76-year-old Paul Pierson. On July 3, 2021, police were called to the Pinetree Country Club after a report of a person shot. There, they discovered the body of golf pro Gene Siller on the 10th green. Siller had apparently been killed after approaching a white pickup truck that had driven onto the course.
The investigation took a grim turn when authorities found two more bodies in the bed of that same pickup truck. They were identified as Paul Pierson, the truck's owner, and 46-year-old Henry Valdez of California. Both men had been bound with tape, gagged, and shot to death. Pierson was from Topeka, Kansas.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the slayings were not a random act of violence. Investigators determined that the suspect, Bryan Rhoden, had a pre-existing relationship with Valdez and Pierson. The motive for the killings was believed to be a drug deal that had gone wrong. According to investigators, Rhoden abducted Valdez and Pierson in Jonesboro, about 40 miles from the golf course. He bound them with duct tape and zip ties before driving them to Pinetree Country Club. It is believed that Siller was tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time, killed because he witnessed the crime in progress.
Bryan Rhoden was later arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder and kidnapping. To avoid the death penalty, Rhoden pleaded guilty to the charges against him. In February 2024, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his role in the deaths of Paul Pierson, Henry Valdez, and Gene Siller.
