Eulalio 'Freddie' Mederos-Vega, a 27-year-old Hispanic male, was found deceased on September 14, 2014, in his Sandy Springs, Georgia, apartment. The discovery was made by his wife when she returned home. Mederos-Vega was not alone; the body of 23-year-old Byron Caceres of Norcross was also found in the apartment. Both men had been shot multiple times. The double homicide, which occurred around 6:30 p.m. on a Sunday, prompted an intensive investigation by the Sandy Springs Police Department. Initially, investigators had no suspects or a clear motive for the killings.
The investigation led authorities to Zusi Aguirre, a 25-year-old woman from Mableton, who was arrested in Mobile, Alabama, during a traffic stop. Aguirre was subsequently charged with two counts of felony murder, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. She was extradited to Fulton County, Georgia, where she was denied bond.
Further investigation implicated a second suspect, Martin Montanez. Aguirre testified that she had driven Montanez to Mederos-Vega's apartment on the day of the murders after Montanez received a phone call. Caceres arrived later with a black bag. Inside the apartment, an altercation occurred that resulted in the fatal shootings of both Mederos-Vega and Caceres.
Ultimately, a Fulton County jury found Martin Montanez guilty of the murders of Eulalio Mederos-Vega and Byron Caceres. In addition to the murder charges, Montanez was also convicted on several theft, firearm-possession, and drug-related offenses connected to the incident. Zusi Aguirre entered into a plea agreement for her involvement. The tragic deaths of the two young men left behind grieving families, including Mederos-Vega's wife and 5-year-old daughter.
