In the late afternoon of Sunday, September 14, 2014, a grim discovery was made inside a Sandy Springs, Georgia, apartment that would unravel a story of violence and loss. Byron Lamar Caceres, a 23-year-old male from Norcross, was found deceased alongside 27-year-old Eulalio “Freddie” Mederos-Vega. Both men had been fatally shot in what police would soon classify as a double homicide. The tragic scene unfolded at an apartment complex located in the 200 block of Franklin Road. The initial investigation left authorities with little to go on, as they had no immediate suspects or a clear motive for the killings.
The wife of Mederos-Vega made the harrowing discovery upon returning home. She found her husband and Caceres, whom she did not recognize, both victims of apparent gunfire. Sandy Springs police were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. and immediately began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the two men's untimely deaths. Detectives worked through the night, canvassing the area and interviewing family members and neighbors in an attempt to uncover any leads that might point them toward a suspect.
A significant break in the case came from an unexpected source. A traffic stop in Mobile, Alabama, led investigators to their first suspect. Zusi Aguirre, a 25-year-old woman from Mableton, was arrested and subsequently charged with two counts of felony murder, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Information obtained during this traffic stop directly linked her to the double homicide in Sandy Springs. Following her arrest, Aguirre was held in a Mobile jail before being extradited back to Georgia to face the charges against her.
Further investigation implicated another individual in the murders. Martin Montanez was also arrested and eventually found guilty in connection with the deaths of both Byron Caceres and Eulalio Mederos-Vega. While the arrests brought a measure of progress in the case, the motive behind the violent act remained unclear to the public. Zusi Aguirre made her first court appearance in Fulton County in October 2014, where she was denied bond. The community was left to mourn the loss of two young men as the legal process against the accused moved forward.
