In the fall of 2014, a young woman's life was tragically cut short in a brazen act of violence that shook the community of Lithonia, Georgia. Marcaysia Dawkins, a 19-year-old female, was waiting at a MARTA bus stop on Fairington Road on the morning of November 23rd. A recent graduate of Lithonia High School, she was working at a daycare center and had aspirations of joining the Navy. On that Sunday morning, she was reportedly on her way to get a bus pass for the week.
Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured the harrowing moments that followed. A man, later identified as 18-year-old Christopher Merritt, approached Dawkins at the bus stop. After a brief conversation, he attempted to steal her handbag. When Dawkins resisted, a struggle ensued, and Merritt fatally shot her twice with a 9mm handgun before fleeing with her belongings. Dawkins was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the senseless killing moved swiftly. Within a week of the shooting, DeKalb County police arrested Christopher Merritt at an abandoned apartment in Lithonia. The arrest brought a measure of relief to a community on edge. As the case against Merritt developed, it was revealed that he was a suspect in several other violent crimes, including armed robberies and sexual assaults. Evidence found at the scene of Dawkins' murder linked him to these other offenses.
In February 2015, a grand jury indicted Merritt on multiple counts, including murder, armed robbery, and aggravated assault in connection with Dawkins' death. The DeKalb County District Attorney's office initially announced its intention to seek the death penalty, underscoring the brutal nature of the crime. However, in a subsequent court proceeding, Christopher Merritt pleaded guilty to the murder of Marcaysia Dawkins. In exchange for his plea, the death penalty was taken off the table, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
