In the early hours of a December morning in 2014, the lively atmosphere inside Wings Cafe in Macon, Georgia, turned to one of terror and tragedy. George Henley, a 34-year-old man working as the DJ at the nightclub, was caught in the crossfire of a violent shootout. The incident, which erupted from a fight within the club, ultimately claimed three lives and left several others wounded. Henley, along with 25-year-old Cory Hollingshed, was killed at the scene on December 12th. A third victim, 38-year-old Derrick Jackson, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital days later. Authorities reported that both Henley and Hollingshed appeared to be unarmed bystanders who were tragically caught in the violence.
The investigation that followed the deadly shooting led to the arrests of several individuals. Four men, identified as Markques Patterson, Eric Watkins, Vertuice Wall, and Jacquez Foster, were taken into custody and faced charges including murder. Two of the men charged in the Wings Cafe killings, Vertuice Wall and another man named Derek Taylor, were later included in a sweeping federal racketeering indictment against 32 alleged members of the Gangster Disciples street gang. Federal prosecutors alleged that Wall, a purported 'first coordinator' for the Macon Gangster Disciples, and Taylor provoked a fight with a member of the rival Crips gang inside the nightclub. This altercation escalated into the shooting that resulted in the deaths of Henley, Hollingshed, who was identified as an alleged Crips gang member, and Jackson. The federal indictment detailed a vast criminal conspiracy involving murder, attempted murder, robbery, and drug trafficking, shedding a new and broader light on the senseless violence that cost George Henley his life.
