In the winter of 2015, a domestic altercation in Cumming, Georgia, tragically cut short the life of 25-year-old James Tanner Conrad. On the evening of January 7th, deputies from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence on Quail Hollow Drive following reports of a domestic dispute. Upon their arrival, they discovered Conrad in the living room, suffering from a single gunshot wound.
He was immediately transported to North Fulton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that night.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified the suspect as 57-year-old Frank Huffman, who was the longtime boyfriend of Conrad's mother, Sherry Conrad. It was determined that a physical fight had broken out between Conrad and Huffman. During the struggle, Huffman produced a firearm and shot Conrad. Sherry Conrad also sustained a minor head injury while attempting to intervene and de-escalate the confrontation. Authorities noted that alcohol was believed to have been a contributing factor in the violent encounter.
Frank Huffman was promptly arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with murder and aggravated assault. He was held at the Forsyth County Detention Center without bond. In the ensuing legal proceedings, a Forsyth County Superior Court jury found Huffman guilty of felony murder and aggravated assault in September 2016. The following month, a judge sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Should he become eligible, Huffman would be at least 90 years old before being considered for release. During the sentencing hearing, Conrad's family members, including his father, sister, and mother, delivered emotional victim impact statements, expressing their profound loss and grief.
