In a tragic turn of events on a Thursday evening in Cumming, Georgia, a family argument culminated in the death of 49-year-old Sadashivia Kumaraswamy. The Indian-American man was fatally shot multiple times by his son, Rajeev Kumaraswamy, who was 25 at the time of the incident on July 22, 2021.
The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about a shooting at a residence on Homestead Ridge Drive at approximately 5:50 p.m.
Upon their arrival, deputies discovered Sadashivia Kumaraswamy deceased at the scene. Investigators learned that an argument between the father and son had escalated, leading Rajeev to retrieve a handgun from his room and shoot his father. There had been no prior calls for service or any known history of domestic disputes at the home that would have foreshadowed such a violent outcome.
Rajeev Kumaraswamy was taken into custody at the scene without incident. He was subsequently charged with felony murder and transported to the Forsyth County Jail, where he was held without bond. The case proceeded through the legal system, marked by a series of significant developments. In June 2024, Rajeev Kumaraswamy entered a guilty plea to malice murder and received a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.
However, in a later legal maneuver, he filed a motion to withdraw his guilty plea, citing ineffective legal counsel. The court granted his motion in October 2024, vacating the previous sentence and placing the case back on the trial docket. The subsequent jury trial reached a swift conclusion in February 2025. After deliberating for only 30 minutes, the jury found Rajeev Kumaraswamy guilty of malice murder and aggravated assault. Following the verdict, a Superior Court judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life incarcerated for the murder of his father. His attorneys have since filed a motion for a new trial.
