In the late summer of 2018 in Cumming, Georgia, a respected high school teacher's life came to a tragic and sudden end. Adrian Lavaughn Brewster, a 50-year-old male, was a science teacher at Etowah High School, known by colleagues and students as an outstanding educator. His life, however, was cut short in what investigators would later determine to be a murder-suicide. The grim discovery was made in the early hours of Monday, August 20, 2018, but it is believed that Mr.
Brewster had been killed days earlier, on Friday, August 17th.
The tragic events unfolded at the family's home on Memphis Street. A concerned family friend contacted authorities after receiving an alarming phone call or text message from Adrian's wife, Jackielyn Belangel Brewster. At approximately 3:45 a.m., Forsyth County sheriff's deputies arrived at the residence to perform a welfare check. They were met by a heartbreaking scene: the couple's two young children, ages 3 and 9, were waiting by the front door. Inside the home, deputies found the bodies of both Adrian and Jackielyn.
Investigators from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office concluded that Jackielyn Brewster, 32, had killed her husband over the weekend before taking her own life on that Monday morning. While the specific causes of death were initially withheld pending autopsies by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, some reports indicated that a firearm was involved. Given the circumstances, with the perpetrator deceased, no arrests were made in the case. The couple's two children were found unharmed and were placed in the care of family and friends following the incident. The community was left to mourn the loss of a beloved teacher, with a memorial held at Etowah High School to honor his memory.
