In the spring of 2015, a dispute between neighbors in Augusta, Georgia, turned fatal, ending the life of 49-year-old Marion Levi Utley. An African American male, Utley was a known figure in his community. On the evening of May 3, 2015, on the 1600 block of Norris Lane, a verbal altercation erupted between Utley and his neighbor, 60-year-old Walter L. Johnson.
The argument escalated, and tragically, it concluded with Utley suffering a gunshot wound to his chest.
First responders arrived at the scene around 9 p.m. to find Utley grievously wounded. Despite any efforts to save him, the Richmond County Coroner pronounced Marion Utley dead at the scene. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Walter L. Johnson, also an African American male, fled on foot, prompting a manhunt by the Richmond County Sheriff's Office who described him as armed and dangerous. The investigation into the shooting suggested that the fatal confrontation was the culmination of ongoing tensions between the two men.
The search for Johnson came to an end two days later, on May 5, 2015, when he was apprehended by law enforcement. Following his arrest, he was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Johnson was subsequently booked into the Richmond County Jail, where he was denied bond. To confirm the cause of death, an autopsy was later performed at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Atlanta. The community was left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a neighbor, sparking conversations about gun violence and the safety of their neighborhood.
