In a wooded area near the Camelot Club Condos on Old National Highway, 19-year-old Michael Gary, a male, was with two friends, Quentarious Cook and Jordan Bembry. The trio had gone to the remote location with the intention of firing their handguns. Their outing took a tragic turn when they were approached from behind by Ramsey Bunkley and another unidentified man.
Bunkley, a known street gang member, brandished a firearm and demanded their belongings.
A robbery attempt quickly escalated into a fatal encounter. As Bembry managed to flee, Cook surrendered his wallet and jewelry to Bunkley. In a moment of fear, Gary also attempted to run but was tragically shot in the back of the head by Bunkley, severing his spine. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene on September 21, 2015. The harrowing event was witnessed by his friends, who were later able to identify Bunkley from a photographic lineup, aiding the Fulton County Police Department in their investigation.
In January 2016, a break in the case occurred when Bunkley appeared in Fulton County Superior Court for an unrelated matter and was subsequently arrested by the Fulton County Sheriff's Department. The arrest brought a sense of hope for justice for Gary's family and friends. Bunkley, who was 22 years old at the time of his conviction, faced a series of serious charges related to the incident.
The legal proceedings culminated in a significant sentence for Bunkley. He was found guilty of participation in criminal street gang activity, murder, felony murder, armed robbery, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. In August 2018, he was sentenced to life in prison plus 50 years, without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would be held accountable for the senseless death of Michael Gary.
