In the early morning hours of September 22, 2015, the life of 27-year-old Cordeldrick Laquinn Brooks came to a violent end in Augusta, Georgia. The night began with Brooks leaving the home he shared with the mother of his child, driving a white GMC Envoy. In the hours that followed, a series of interactions tracked through cell phone records would lead to a fatal confrontation.
Between 4:00 a.m. and 4:08 a.m., Brooks's phone was in contact with that of Kameron Reese. The two men, along with Christopher Berry, eventually met. At one point, Berry brandished a gun and struck Brooks in the face with it. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Brooks suggested he knew where they could purchase marijuana and offered to take them to a hotel. The three men then got into Brooks's Envoy.
Their journey concluded at the intersection of Lumpkin and Old McDuffie Roads. In a desperate attempt to escape, Brooks jerked the wheel of the vehicle, causing it to crash into a telephone pole. As Reese fled the vehicle, he heard three gunshots. A passerby later discovered Brooks, shoeless and severely injured, at the scene of the crash. Emergency services were called, but Brooks succumbed to two gunshot wounds to his torso.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an investigation led to the arrests of Christopher Berry and Kameron Reese. During the investigation, Reese provided varying accounts of the events but ultimately testified against Berry. His testimony, along with cell phone evidence, was crucial in the case against Berry. In April 2018, a jury found Christopher Berry guilty of the malice murder and kidnapping of Cordeldrick Laquinn Brooks. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for his crimes. The Supreme Court of Georgia later affirmed Berry's convictions.
