In the early hours of November 1, 2015, a 911 call from a home on Hampton Park Drive in Buford, Georgia, reported a suicide. Inside, 38-year-old Jordan Whitson was found unresponsive at the bottom of a staircase with a gunshot wound to his right cheek. His wife, Liubov Volkova, who made the call, informed responding officers that her husband had shot himself. The initial scene presented a tragic, yet seemingly straightforward, case of a self-inflicted death.
However, as investigators from the Gwinnett County Police Department delved deeper, inconsistencies in the narrative began to emerge. The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's findings proved to be a pivotal turning point in the case. The autopsy revealed a lack of gunpowder or burning around the wound, indicating the shot was fired from a distance and not at close range, as would be expected in a suicide. The downward angle of the bullet's trajectory was also inconsistent with a self-inflicted wound. These forensic details cast significant doubt on the initial report of suicide and pointed towards homicide.
The investigation shifted its focus to Whitson's wife, Liubov Volkova. Evidence gathered by detectives began to paint a picture of a troubled marriage. Friends of the couple revealed that they had separated at least twice and had been arguing on the night of Whitson's death after returning from trick-or-treating with friends. It was also reported that Volkova had expressed frustration over her husband's gun collection and the amount of money he spent on it. In June 2016, months after her husband's death, Volkova was arrested and charged with his murder.
