In late 2015, a dispute over money and mounting tension led to the tragic death of 47-year-old Wayne Sapp, a male resident of Atlanta, Georgia. The man responsible for his death was his 63-year-old wheelchair-bound caregiver, Anthony Thompson, with whom Sapp shared a home on Hill Street. Their arrangement had soured after Thompson's insurance company determined Sapp could no longer be his official caretaker, a decision that significantly reduced their shared income.
Sapp continued to live with Thompson and assist him, but the financial strain and Thompson's demanding nature created a volatile environment.
The situation escalated on the morning of December 9, 2015. Thompson had grown increasingly agitated with Sapp, accusing him of unplugging appliances to harass him, a claim Sapp's cousin, who had taken over as the official caregiver, disputed. That morning, Thompson brandished a silver revolver and fired a warning shot at Sapp inside their home. Sapp fled the house, but Thompson followed him in his wheelchair. Outside, Thompson fired a fatal shot, striking Sapp in the chest. He collapsed and died in the driveway of their home.
Later that same day, police arrested Anthony Thompson at the Five Points MARTA station, where he confessed to the murder. The investigation revealed Thompson's extensive criminal history, which included 15 prior arrests and nine felony convictions. In June 2019, a Fulton County Superior Court jury found Thompson guilty of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison plus ten years for the killing of Wayne Sapp.
