Arfredrick “Little Fred” Magby Jr., a 27-year-old Black male from the Atlanta area, was remembered by family as a young man whose life ended suddenly in a burst of violence that local news outlets said unfolded inside an apartment on Godby Road in College Park in early May 2022. Reports describe him as having gone to the apartment with family or friends, not as someone looking for trouble, but as someone caught in another person’s rage.
In the middle of what should have been an ordinary visit, investigators said a man tied to the home arrived, became enraged over finding guests there, and opened fire inside the apartment. Magby was struck during the shooting, and relatives later spoke publicly about the horror of losing him in a place where he should have been safe.
The accounts that emerged afterward painted a chaotic and deeply personal scene. Local coverage said the suspect was the father of two children who were present in the apartment, and that the shooting happened in front of them. One witness described trying to comfort Magby in his final moments, calling out to him and urging him to hold on. His father, devastated and angry, questioned why the man police identified as the killer had not been quickly taken into custody, and he spoke with reporters about the pain of watching days pass without an arrest. Those early stories carried a sense of helplessness, with the family pleading for justice while the suspect remained at large.
The suspect publicly identified by police and local media was Dontavious Carr. College Park police named him as the man accused of killing Magby, and news reports repeatedly said he fled after the shooting and remained on the run for more than a year. During that stretch, his name appeared on Clayton County Sheriff Levon Allen’s Top Ten Most Wanted list, turning the case from a family’s private grief into a widely watched manhunt. The picture that formed in news coverage was of a killing driven by jealousy and control, with Magby becoming the fatal target when Carr allegedly stormed into the apartment and started shooting.
The arrest finally came in June 2023. Authorities said Carr was first spotted while allegedly breaking into cars in Sandy Springs, then fled again before law enforcement tracked him into Atlanta. According to sheriff’s officials and local television reports, the chase ended after Georgia State Patrol intervened, disabled a vehicle he used while trying to escape, and pursued him on foot. Deputies said he reached toward his waist and was tased; after he was taken into custody, officers reportedly found a loaded handgun on him. He was then turned over to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office. Based on the online sources I found, Carr was arrested as the murder suspect in Magby’s case, but I did not find reliable later reporting confirming a trial, conviction, or final court outcome in connection with Magby’s killing.
