In the early morning hours of a Sunday in late November 2016, the routine hum of traffic on Atlanta's Downtown Connector was pierced by an act of violence that would leave a family grieving and a community searching for answers. David Hood, a 40-year-old Black/African American male truck driver, was behind the wheel of his rig, hauling a load of magazines from South Carolina.
For reasons that remain a mystery, he pulled his truck over into the emergency lane just north of the Capitol Avenue exit at approximately 6:50 a.m. and stepped out of his vehicle.
What transpired in the next twenty minutes is known only to those who were present on that desolate stretch of highway. At around 7:10 a.m., a passing driver made a grim discovery: David Hood was lying on the pavement behind his truck. He had been shot in the head. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene, and Hood was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries on November 30, 2016.
The Atlanta Police Department launched an investigation into the perplexing shooting. Investigators were stumped by the lack of a clear motive. While Hood's wallet was missing from the scene, police were hesitant to label it a robbery, as cash was found in his pocket and his cell phone and other valuable items were left untouched inside the truck. The cargo of magazines also appeared to be undisturbed. With no immediate suspects and little evidence to go on, detectives were left to piece together the final moments of David Hood's life, appealing to the public for any witnesses who may have seen or heard anything unusual on the Downtown Connector that morning.
Months turned into years, and the case of David Hood's murder grew cold. In a report issued in February of the following year, his name was listed among the 51 unsolved homicides in the city of Atlanta for 2016. To this day, no arrests have been made in connection with his death, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The story of David Hood remains a somber tale of a life cut short by a senseless act of violence, leaving behind a family still waiting for justice and a case that continues to be a question mark in the files of the Atlanta Police Department.
