In a tragic turn of events, what should have been a time of immense joy for Craigory Burch Jr. became a prelude to his untimely death. The 20-year-old forklift operator from Fitzgerald, Georgia, had his life cut short in a violent home invasion just two months after winning a staggering $434,272 in the Fantasy 5 lottery jackpot in November 2015. Burch, a young African-American man, had used a portion of his winnings to buy Christmas gifts for those in need, an act of generosity that would be cruelly twisted into a motive for his murder.

On the night of January 20, 2016, three masked men, armed with a shotgun, forced their way into Burch's home. In a harrowing encounter, they demanded money from the lottery winner, who was with his girlfriend, Jasmine Hendricks, and his young children. Hendricks recounted Burch's desperate pleas with the intruders, begging them not to harm him in front of his family. He even offered them his bank card. Despite his compliance, the assailants shot him. Burch threw his pants towards the robbers, but they couldn't find his wallet. After initially leaving, the perpetrators returned and shot him again, this time fatally.

The brazen and senseless killing sparked an intensive investigation that led to the arrests of seven individuals. The suspects were identified as Rosalyn Swain, 22; Keyana Dyous, 24; Earnest Holcomb, 27; Wayan Jordan, 17; Dabrentise Overstreet, 19; Nathaniel Baker, 28; and Anjavell Johnson, 21. They all faced a string of serious charges, including malice murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Authorities stated that Burch was a 'pre-selected target' and that the attack was not random.

The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of justice for Craigory Burch Jr.'s family. Several of the accused were convicted for their roles in the murder. Dabrentise Overstreet was found guilty of malice murder, a conviction that was later upheld by the Georgia Supreme Court in October 2021. Prosecutors revealed that Overstreet and others had resented Burch for what they perceived as 'flexing' and 'showing off' by buying Christmas presents for children in the neighborhood, which fueled their decision to rob him. Another suspect, Wayan Malik Jordan, was also convicted on all counts after a separate trial in March 2017 and was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus 15 years. His conviction was also upheld by the Georgia Supreme Court in November 2019. During the trial, it was revealed that some of the perpetrators joked and laughed about the shooting as they divided the meager proceeds from the robbery, which amounted to only $200 and some cell phones.
