Scott E. Abernathy, a 38-year-old Caucasian male, was reported missing by his family on January 28, 2016. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office responded to the report and initiated an investigation. The following day, January 29, 2016, law enforcement and the Cherokee County Rescue Squad discovered Abernathy's body in the Chattooga River. The investigation revealed that Abernathy had been shot before his body was dumped in the river.
