In the late afternoon of January 29, 2018, the quiet community of Fleming, Georgia, was disturbed by the discovery of a local man's body. James Caswell Jones, a 62-year-old male from the nearby town of Midway, was found deceased beside his blue GMC Sierra pickup truck outside a residence on Freedman Grove Road. An investigation by the Liberty County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation soon revealed that Jones had been the victim of a fatal shooting.
Authorities immediately began treating the case as a homicide, appealing to the public for any information regarding unusual activity in the area on the day of the incident.
The investigation into Jones's death progressed as detectives conducted interviews with witnesses who were in the vicinity at the time of the shooting, as well as with members of Jones's family. This led them to identify a person of interest, who, after further questioning, became the primary suspect in the case.
A significant breakthrough came when authorities arrested 31-year-old Eptwarnd Saunders, also of Midway, in connection with the slaying of James Caswell Jones. Saunders, an employee at Angie's Diner, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and aggravated assault. While the motive for the shooting was still being investigated at the time of the arrest, the information gathered was substantial enough to secure warrants for Saunders. Following his arrest, Saunders had his first court appearance at the Liberty County Jail, where he was denied bond.
