In the late spring of 2019, a situation unfolded in a quiet residential area of East Liberty County, Georgia, that resulted in the death of John Evers, a 51-year-old male from Savannah. On May 20th, events took a fatal turn during what authorities have described as a home invasion on Fleming Loop Road. During the course of this alleged crime, Evers was shot and killed by the homeowner.
In the weeks that followed, law enforcement officials made two arrests in connection with the incident.
One of the individuals taken into custody was Christopher Grass. He was apprehended on June 12th by the United States Marshall's Services Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force. At the time of his arrest, Grass was facing charges of murder, aggravated assault, and home invasion. The murder charge stemmed from his alleged involvement in the home invasion that led to Evers' death.
A second suspect, Dustin Lax, also from Savannah, was arrested on May 24th in Jasper County, South Carolina. He faced the same charges as Grass: murder, assault, and home invasion. Reports from the time indicate that Lax was captured after escaping from U.S. Marshals in Georgia. In addition to the charges in Liberty County, Lax was also facing charges related to the theft of a motor vehicle in Jasper County. Following their arrests, both men were incarcerated at the Liberty County Jail in Hinesville.
