In the late summer of 2016, the city of Columbus, Georgia, was shaken by the senseless death of 31-year-old Deonn Carter, a beloved local figure known for his warm personality and his special bond with law enforcement. Carter, a man with autism, worked as a bagger at a Piggly Wiggly grocery store and was a cherished member of his church and community.
On a Tuesday in August, while simply getting the mail outside his home, Carter was confronted by five men.
The assailants robbed him of his iPhone, and during the encounter, one of the men shot him in the back of the knee as he tried to flee. Carter was rushed to the hospital, and for eleven days, it seemed as though he would recover from his injuries. However, a blood clot developed as a complication from the gunshot wound, and on August 20, 2016, Deonn Carter passed away.
The community, particularly the police officers and firefighters who considered Carter a dear friend, was heartbroken by the loss. The investigation into his death led to the arrest of five suspects. The man who fired the gun, 17-year-old Tyquez Darnell Davis, was ultimately convicted of felony murder and aggravated assault. He was sentenced to life in prison.
The four other men involved also faced justice for their roles in the tragic event. Travarus Thomas, who expressed remorse for his actions, and Quamaine Thomas both testified against Davis. In exchange for their testimony, the murder charges against them were dropped, and they pleaded guilty to other charges. Travarus Thomas received a 10-year prison sentence for aggravated assault and burglary, while Quamaine Thomas was sentenced to nine years for aggravated assault. The remaining two men, Dequoyae Devon Waldon and Tauron Mykevious Stepney, also pleaded guilty. Waldon was sentenced to 20 years in prison for burglary, attempt to commit a felony, and misdemeanor theft. Stepney pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and received a 15-year prison sentence.
