In the late summer of 2016, a tragedy unfolded in a Stockbridge, Georgia motel room that cut short the life of Elimisha Maryetta Gates, a 40-year-old African American woman. On August 23rd, police were dispatched to the Express Inn & Suites on West Highway 138 after receiving a call about a person down. Inside one of the rooms, they made a grim discovery; Gates was deceased, having been shot in the back of the head as she slept. The brutal nature of the act sent ripples of shock through the community and left her family to grapple with a devastating loss.
Investigators quickly zeroed in on a primary suspect: Tory Leroy Jones, the victim's 44-year-old ex-boyfriend. The nature of their past relationship and evidence found at the scene pointed to his involvement. In the immediate aftermath of the killing, Jones fled the state, prompting a manhunt. Law enforcement considered him to be armed and dangerous, and a public alert was issued, describing Jones and the vehicle he was believed to be driving. The search for him extended beyond Georgia's borders.
With the assistance of U.S. Marshals, the search for Tory Leroy Jones came to an end in Huntsville, Alabama, where he was apprehended. Following his capture, he was extradited back to Georgia to face justice. Jones was charged with a string of serious offenses, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, as well as possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
