In the fall of 2016, a social gathering at a home in McDonough, Georgia, took a tragic and violent turn, resulting in the death of 20-year-old Destiny Hope Olinger and three others. On the night of October 26, a group of friends had gathered for a bonfire at a residence on Moccasin Gap Road. At some point during the party, two individuals, later identified as Jacob Kosky, 22, and Matthew Baker Jr., 19, both of McDonough, left the event only to return with firearms.
What had been a peaceful get-together devolved into a scene of horror as gunfire erupted. When law enforcement arrived at the home in the early morning hours of October 27, they discovered a gruesome scene in the living room and kitchen. Three individuals were found deceased from gunshot wounds: 18-year-old Matthew Hicks of McDonough, 29-year-old Keith Gibson of Covington, and 20-year-old Sophia Bullard of Thomason. Destiny Olinger was found inside the house, critically injured with at least one gunshot wound. She was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
For several days, Destiny Olinger fought for her life, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, October 30, 2016. Her death brought the total number of fatalities from the shooting to four. An obituary described Destiny as a vibrant young woman who worked as a veterinary technician at McDonough Animal Hospital. She had a deep love for animals, the outdoors, and spending time with her family and friends.
The investigation into the quadruple homicide quickly led to the identification of Jacob Kosky and Matthew Baker Jr. as the primary suspects. It was reported that Kosky was the shooter and that the motive for the attack was robbery. Both men were arrested and faced a litany of charges, including multiple counts of murder and aggravated assault. In addition to Kosky and Baker, three other individuals—Jacob Williams, 18, Kayla Head, 21, and Brooke Knight, 19—were arrested and charged with obstruction of a police investigation for their roles in the aftermath of the shooting.
In January 2017, a grand jury indicted Jacob Kosky and Matthew Baker Jr. on murder and other charges. The legal proceedings that followed shed more light on the events of that tragic night and the backgrounds of the accused. During his sentencing, Kosky's defense attorney detailed a history of mental illness, including a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and past hallucinations. Despite this, the court process moved forward, seeking to bring justice for the four lives that were cut short in a senseless act of violence.
