In the summer of 2017, the life of 18-year-old JaCarlos Jeffries, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Atlanta, Georgia. On the evening of July 13, just eight days before his nineteenth birthday, Jeffries was standing outside a food mart in the 300 block of Fletcher Street in southwest Atlanta when he was shot multiple times. The young father was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The preliminary investigation suggested that the assailant
had hidden behind a building before approaching Jeffries and opening fire. After the shooting, the suspect was believed to have fled the scene on foot. Authorities did not believe robbery was the motive for the attack. Family members stated that no money was taken from Jeffries, and they were at a loss as to why anyone would want to harm him. He left behind a one-year-old son who, his family lamented, would only know his father through the stories and pictures they shared with him.
In the weeks and months that followed, the Atlanta Police Department worked to identify a suspect. They released a sketch of a person of interest they wished to question in connection with the murder. This individual was described as a Black male with a brown complexion, a scar by his eye, and possibly a teardrop tattoo. Despite the circulation of the sketch and a reward of up to $2,000 offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment, the case grew cold.
Years have passed since the senseless killing of JaCarlos Jeffries, and his case remains unsolved. The person of interest has never been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with his murder. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown. The family of JaCarlos Jeffries continues to hope that one day, justice will be served for their loved one, a young man whose life was taken far too soon.
