In the early morning hours of Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018, the life of 25-year-old Freddie James McKenzie, Jr. was cut short in his hometown of Vienna, Georgia. A United States Army veteran, McKenzie was fatally shot outside of Klub Money, a local nightclub. The events leading to his death began inside the club with a fight between two rival gangs.
The altercation prompted the club's owner to shut down the establishment and ask everyone to leave.
The conflict, however, did not end there. Once outside, the animosity between the Dooly and Crisp County area gang members and their rivals from Macon County escalated into gunfire. It was during this exchange of shots near a residential area that McKenzie was struck and died at the scene. The chaos of that morning left a family and community grappling with a sudden and violent loss. Friends and family remembered McKenzie as a protector and a big brother figure, and his death prompted vigils and calls for an end to gun violence.
For three years, the investigation into Freddie McKenzie's death continued. Then, in March of 2021, a breakthrough was announced. Following a presentation of the case to a Dooly County Grand Jury in October 2020, which resulted in a 134-count indictment, 15 individuals were arrested in connection with the shooting. The arrests were carried out on March 2nd and March 17th, 2021.
The numerous charges brought against the suspects included Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Tampering with Evidence, and violations of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. Among those taken into custody were individuals identified as members of the Gangster Disciple and Blood gangs. Some of the named suspects included Desi Jarrod Wiggins, Jykeel Presley, Devocusis Aykeem Prater, and Demetrius D. Ford, all alleged to be validated Gangster Disciple members. Also arrested were Ariel Frederick, another alleged Gangster Disciple member, and several alleged Blood gang members: Christopher A. Guilfo, Jessie Lee Hannor, Tyrus Jacquez Robinson, Jaylan D. Kendrick, and Curtis Maurice Hannor. The case was then turned over to the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
