Macaleb Malik Jackson, a 23-year-old man from Hawkinsville, Georgia, was known by his loved ones as a grandson, son, brother, uncle, and nephew. On the night he was killed, he was spending time with family and friends, enjoying a homecoming celebration. His life was cut short in what his family described as a random act of violence, leaving them with unimaginable pain.

The festive atmosphere of the Dooly County High School homecoming weekend was shattered in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 4, 2026. More than 1,000 people had gathered for a large, unsanctioned block party on Pine Street in Vienna, Georgia, celebrating the local football team's victory. At approximately 1:25 a.m., as deputies patrolled the crowded event that spanned four blocks, gunfire erupted. The celebration descended into chaos as more than 50 shots were fired from multiple locations.

When the shooting stopped, deputies discovered a horrific scene. Macaleb Malik Jackson and another young man, 21-year-old Ja'Quavion Aderious Jackson of Cordele, were found deceased in the 600 block of Pine Street. Authorities stated the two men did not appear to be related. In addition to the two fatalities, 35 other people were injured, ranging in age from 14 to 51. At least 25 of them had sustained gunshot wounds, while others were hurt in the scramble to escape the gunfire. The injured were transported to several regional hospitals with conditions ranging from stable to critical.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was called in by the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office to lead the investigation into the mass shooting. Investigators spent days processing the extensive crime scene and interviewing numerous witnesses. Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy noted that while the homecoming festivities on Friday night had been peaceful, Saturday night was a "different story." He commented, "At large parties with people from different places, not just your locals, sometimes problems come." In response to the violence, Vienna's mayor declared a state of emergency and imposed a temporary curfew.

Within days, the investigation led to several arrests. On October 9, 2026, the GBI and the Dooly County Sheriff's Office arrested 17-year-old Khadarius “KD” Ray. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a person under 18 and participating in criminal street gang activity. On October 14, authorities announced two more arrests: Kelcey Smith, 36, and Johntavirous Robinson, 40, both from Cordele. They were charged with two counts of participation in criminal street gang activity, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and tampering with evidence.

In the wake of the tragedy, an impromptu prayer vigil was held at the courthouse in Vienna, where about 100 community members gathered to pray for the victims and their families. A GoFundMe campaign was organized to help Macaleb's mother with funeral expenses and to allow her time away from work to grieve the devastating loss of her son.

As of October 2026, the investigation remained active and ongoing, with law enforcement officials stating that more arrests were expected. The case file will eventually be turned over to the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
