JaQuavion Aderious Jackson, known to his loved ones as "Scooter," was a 21-year-old man from Cordele, Georgia. Those who knew him remembered a young man with a contagious smile and impeccable manners. He was considered a great coworker, someone who could be counted on to get a job done without complaint. One friend recalled him being "so tuff" at track practice. In online tributes, a woman who called herself his "work moma" expressed her heartbreak, writing, "Son, this has truly crushed my heart... You know I loved you as my own and you loved me and gave me the upmost respect. Baby boy take your rest until we meet again." A fundraiser described him as a son and a friend whose life mattered deeply to those around him.

The night he was killed, JaQuavion was at a large homecoming block party in Vienna, Georgia, a small city about 130 miles south of Atlanta. On the evening of Saturday, October 3, into the early morning of Sunday, October 4, 2026, more than 1,000 people had gathered for the celebration, which spanned several blocks. Dooly County Sheriff's deputies were on patrol, monitoring the large crowd as the event was winding down.

Around 1:25 a.m., the festive atmosphere was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Witnesses described bullets flying from left to right as chaos erupted. More than 50 shots were fired from at least two different locations about a block apart, near the 900 and 600 blocks of Pine Street. In the panic, people ran for their lives, and some were injured by vehicles while trying to flee the scene. One woman who was there later said, "I could have died. The girls that were with me could’ve died. Some people did die."

When the shooting stopped, deputies found a horrifying scene. JaQuavion Aderious Jackson was found deceased in the 600 block of Pine Street. Also killed was 23-year-old Macaleb Malik Jackson of Hawkinsville. In total, 37 people were wounded in the mass shooting, with injuries ranging from stable to critical. The victims, who were transported to several regional hospitals, ranged in age from 14 to 51 years old. At least 25 of them had sustained gunshot wounds. JaQuavion's body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

The Dooly County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to lead the inquiry into the deadly violence. In the days that followed, the investigation led to several arrests. On October 9, 2026, authorities arrested 17-year-old Khadarius “KD” Ray of Dooly County. He was charged with possession of a handgun by a person under 18 and participating in criminal street gang activity. Investigators made it clear that they expected more arrests.

On October 14, the GBI announced two more arrests. Kelcey Smith, 36, and Johntavirous Robinson, 40, both from Cordele, were taken into custody. Each man was charged with two counts of participation in criminal street gang activity, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and tampering with evidence. Authorities have not publicly detailed the specific roles each of the three individuals allegedly played in the shooting, nor have they released a motive for the attack.

In the wake of the tragedy, the community of Vienna came together in prayer. An impromptu vigil was held at the courthouse on the morning of the shooting, where about 100 people gathered to pray for the victims and their families. A fundraiser was also established to help JaQuavion's family with the unexpected funeral and burial expenses. A public visitation was held on October 16, followed by a funeral service at the Crisp County Middle School Auditorium on October 17. JaQuavion was laid to rest at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Cordele.

As of late October 2026, the GBI stated that the investigation remained active and ongoing, with the possibility of additional arrests. The case file was expected to be turned over to the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. A reward of up to $5,000 was offered for information. Authorities urged anyone with knowledge of the shooting to contact the GBI Regional Investigative Office at 478-987-4545 or the GBI tip line at 1-800-597-8477.
