In the early hours of April 14, 2018, a dispute in Macon, Georgia, turned fatal, claiming the life of 44-year-old Jim Julius Baldwin. The night began on April 13, 2018, when Baldwin was at a gathering with friends at a house on Berkner Avenue. Also present was the girlfriend of a man identified as Tirell Mitchell. Earlier in the day, Mitchell and his girlfriend had been involved in an argument.
Later that night, an angered Mitchell arrived at the Berkner Avenue residence and confronted his girlfriend, Baldwin, and the other individuals present. Witnesses reported that Mitchell became increasingly agitated and refused to leave when asked. He also prevented Baldwin from leaving the premises. The confrontation escalated into a physical altercation between Baldwin and Mitchell, culminating in Mitchell shooting Baldwin in the leg. Evidence presented later in court showed an imprint from the gun on Baldwin's thigh.
Despite his injury, Baldwin managed to flee the house and ran towards his sister's home on the nearby Saint Claire Street, but he collapsed in the driveway. Emergency services were called to the scene around 1:00 a.m. on April 14th. Baldwin was transported to Navicent Health, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:48 a.m. The cause of death was the gunshot wound to the main artery in his leg.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office quickly identified a person of interest in the shooting. Later that same day, Tirell Mitchell, then 27, was charged with murder. In August 2019, a Bibb County jury found Mitchell guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. A judge subsequently sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional five years to be served consecutively for the gun charge.
