In the quiet town of Thomson, Georgia, a tragedy unfolded on a Sunday morning in September 2018, forever altering the lives of a local family. On September 23, deputies from the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence on Red Haven Drive around 5:40 a.m. following a report of a person being shot. Upon their arrival, they discovered the body of 62-year-old Cynthia Cason in her yard.
The investigation quickly revealed a grim scenario. Cynthia's husband, 58-year-old Jeffery Cason, was identified as the suspect and had barricaded himself inside a garage near the home. The situation prompted a significant law enforcement response, with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office SWAT team being called to the scene to negotiate with Jeffery. For hours, they attempted to bring a peaceful resolution to the standoff.
As negotiations continued, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to assist in the homicide investigation at approximately 6:20 a.m. The preliminary investigation indicated that Jeffery Cason had shot and killed his wife. The standoff concluded around 9:55 a.m. when the SWAT team entered the garage and found Jeffery Cason deceased from what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The authorities subsequently classified the event as a murder-suicide.
Cynthia Knight 'Cindy' Cason was a lifelong resident of McDuffie County. She was a mother to a son and a daughter and a grandmother to six grandchildren. Remembered as a homemaker who had worked for many years at a local business, she was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed reading in her spare time. Funeral services were held the following Saturday, and she was laid to rest at the Westview Cemetery.
