In the fall of 2018, the life of 27-year-old Alex Ashley Mixon, a male resident of Albany, Georgia, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. On the evening of November 24th, Mixon was working as a delivery driver for Loco's Pub and Grill, a job he had held for a number of years. A call came in for a delivery to a residence on West Broad Avenue, an order that Mixon himself may have taken. Unbeknownst to him, the address was a vacant house, the destination of a carefully laid trap.
Upon his arrival, as he sat in his vehicle, Mixon was ambushed by at least two individuals. In the ensuing attack, he was shot in the neck. Despite being rushed to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, his injuries proved fatal, and he died a short time later. The motive for the attack appeared to be a robbery, with investigators finding counterfeit money connected to the incident. The Albany community was left in shock, with Mixon's employer remembering him as a hardworking and beloved member of their 'family.'
The Albany Police Department, including its Gang Unit, responded swiftly to the crime, and their investigation quickly led to the identification and arrest of six suspects. The individuals taken into custody were Jaquan Oliver, 17; Jaquarious Oliver, 15; Jaquanious Oliver, 19; Jaylen Miller, 18; and brothers Iren Carter, 18, and Mickee Carter, 19. The charges against them were severe, ranging from felony murder and aggravated assault to tampering with evidence. All six were denied bond and held in the Dougherty County Jail. There was speculation from the District Attorney that the crime could have been gang-related, possibly an initiation.
In the months that followed, the wheels of justice turned, bringing a resolution to the case. All six defendants were either found guilty of or pleaded guilty to felony charges. Jaquan Oliver, who was identified as a gang member, pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Jacquarious Oliver and Jaylen Miller also entered guilty pleas to their respective charges. Jaquavious Oliver pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The Carter brothers, Iren and Mickee, were found guilty of forgery in connection with the counterfeit money used in the setup.
