In the early evening of Friday, February 15, 2019, a dispute at the Henry Way Apartments in Hawkinsville, Georgia, ended in the shooting death of 27-year-old Shundrecus Jackson, an African American male. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which was called in to assist the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, stated that the incident occurred around 6:18 p.m. at the apartment complex located on 6th Street. Jackson was fatally wounded and died from his injuries.
Initial reports from law enforcement indicated that a verbal altercation preceded the shooting. The man who shot Jackson was identified as 28-year-old Terry Harris Jr., also of Hawkinsville. According to the GBI, their preliminary investigation found that during the verbal exchange, Jackson produced a firearm, and it was at that point that Harris shot him. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Harris turned himself into the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office and provided a statement to law enforcement.
Harris was cooperative with the investigators and was subsequently released from custody. At the time, law enforcement officials stated that no charges had been filed against him. The case was still under active investigation, with agents and investigators interviewing witnesses. The complete case file was to be turned over to the Oconee District Attorney's Office for review to determine if any charges would be filed. There have been no subsequent reports of any arrests or charges being filed against Terry Harris Jr. in connection with the death of Shundrecus Jackson. The family of Jackson, including his then 10-year-old daughter, mourned his loss, remembering him as a kind and helpful person.
