In the winter of 2019, the life of 19-year-old Jaleen Harrell was tragically cut short in a quiet Lawrenceville, Georgia cul-de-sac. On the afternoon of March 1st, just before 1 p.m., Harrell was shot in the driveway of a home on Shoal Court. He was rushed to Gwinnett Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Investigators determined that Harrell did not reside in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred.
Witnesses at the scene described an altercation
between Harrell and at least one other individual before the fatal shot was fired. Immediately after the shooting, a white Acura sedan was seen speeding away from the area. A neighbor's surveillance camera captured images of the fleeing vehicle, which police later identified as an Acura TL. The investigation into Harrell's death quickly pointed towards a drug-related robbery, as marijuana was discovered at the scene of the crime.
Two individuals were ultimately identified in connection with the death of Jaleen Harrell: Javion Tremir Caldwell and Shamarii Bonner. In June 2019, a Gwinnett County grand jury indicted both men on charges including felony murder. At Caldwell's trial, it was revealed that Harrell had arranged to buy marijuana from him. Caldwell, accompanied by his friend Shamarii Bonner, met Harrell in the cul-de-sac. An argument ensued over a suspected counterfeit bill, leading to a struggle over the marijuana. It was during this physical altercation that Bonner allegedly shot Harrell.
Javion Tremir Caldwell stood trial for his role in the events of that day. He was ultimately found guilty of felony murder predicated on possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. The jury, however, found him not guilty of felony murder predicated on aggravated assault and of aggravated assault. Caldwell was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. His subsequent appeal, in which he argued issues with the jury instructions and claimed the verdicts were repugnant, was rejected by the Supreme Court of Georgia in October 2023, and his conviction was affirmed.
Following the shooting, an arrest warrant was issued for Shamarii Bonner, who was also 19 at the time. Investigators believed he may have fled the state, noting he had ties to the Lawrenceville area but a more recent address in Petersburg, Virginia. While court documents from as late as October 2023 confirm Bonner was indicted alongside Caldwell, publicly available online sources do not indicate that he has been apprehended or faced trial for his alleged role in the shooting death of Jaleen Harrell.
