On a Sunday afternoon, February 27, 2022, the life of 21-year-old Dakota Jovan McGee of Lawrenceville, Georgia, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded around 3:45 p.m. near the intersection of Macland Drive and McCart Road in Gwinnett County. Gwinnett County police responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting in the area. Upon their arrival, officers discovered McGee and another man in his 20s suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both men were transported to a local hospital, where McGee succumbed to his injuries shortly after. The other victim survived the shooting.
The investigation into the double shooting quickly led to the identification of suspects. Authorities believe the shooting was drug-related and that the individuals had arranged to meet at that location. Brendyn Walker, a 24-year-old from Lawrenceville, was one of the men found injured at the scene. He was taken to the hospital before being arrested and booked into the Gwinnett County Adult Detention Center. Walker was charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Further investigation led to the arrest of a second suspect, 21-year-old Brendon Woods, also from Lawrenceville. Woods was apprehended in Gastonia, North Carolina, with the assistance of the US Marshals. He faces the same charges as Walker: felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Woods was awaiting extradition back to Gwinnett County to face the charges. The legal proceedings against both men are ongoing as the Gwinnett County police continue their investigation to bring justice for Dakota McGee and his family.
